Native Korean cardinal numbers

Native Korean cardinal numbers are used with a count such as 개, 병, 다발, and 명, etc. But when counting a large number of objects, Koreans prefer using Sino-Korean numbers.

the eleventh 열 한 번째
the twentieth 스무 번째

the hundredth 백 번째

-번 째 [bon-jjeh] is used for repeating the number of times. -째 [jjeh] indicates one's turn.

 

Examples)

1. 열 한 번째 생일 the eleventh birthday.
2. 오늘 샤워 세 번째 하는 거에요. This is the third time that I'm taking a shower today.
3. 벌써 열여섯 번째 질문이야. (it's) the sixteenth question already.
4. 제이미가 석 달 째 공부를 안 하고 있어요. Jamie is not studying for the third month in row.
5. 내가 둘째로 주사 맞을게. I'll have an injection in the second.

 


 

Sino-Korean cardinal numbers

Sino-Korean numbers are used with dates, months, years, minutes, seconds, money and karats. They can also be used for counting large numbers. Sino-Korean ordinal numbers

 

Examples)

1. (제) 1악장 the 1st movement
2. (제) 3페이지/쪽 page3
3. (중학교) 1학년 first grade (in middle school)
4. (결혼) 10주년 the tenth anniversary (of wedding)
5. (빌딩) 8층 8th floor (of a building)
6. (비행기) 1등석 first class (flight)
